Frank Zummo (Sum 41 / Street Drum Corps) was awarded the Skully for Best Drummer at Monday night’s Alternative Press Music Awards. As the drummer of Sum 41 and Krewella, founder of Street Drum Corps and past drummer with artists like Mötley Crüe, this hard-working musician thanked his fans, family, team and most importantly, dedicated the award to the reason he picked up sticks in the first place, his father who passed away earlier this year. For Frank’s full acceptance speech, head to Alternative Press.
Frank also took the stage to perform in a one of a kind Drum Explosion performance with Adrian Young (DREAMCAR / No Doubt) and Josh Dun (Twenty One Pilots.) The performance featured all three drummers playing medleys of their own hits on kits, taking drums into the crowd, a signature Josh Dun backflip and more theatrics. The whole thing left not only the audience in Cleveland and the thousands of viewers streaming live online thanks to Amazon Music and Twitch amazed, but also the show’s host, Andy Biersack. “I’m still dumbfounded by that,” Biersack said. “That was one of the coolest things of all time.”For a full recap of the performance, including videos and photos, visit Alternative Press. Frank performed part of the set on a custom hand-painted drum by Shepard Fairey, which is now housed in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland.
Facts – Born in New York, Frank Zummo began drumming around age 3, when he discovered his father’s drum kit. By age 7, he was an award-winning drummer, taking home top prize in Long Island Drum Centers “Battle of the Beats”. Looking at Zummo’s impressive resume, it’s clear to see he never stopped. Zummo has performed on many TV shows over the years (The Tonight Show w/ Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien Show, Hells Kitchen, Master Chef, American Idol & Glee). He has also recorded on many platinum & gold records with Artists Kelly Clarkson, Orianthi, Gary Numan & The Used as well as on scores for the films “Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World” and “Beautiful Creatures.” Additionally, he has played for bands such as Julien-K, Dead By Sunrise (ft. Chester Bennington) and even filling in for injured Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee during 2009’s Crüe Fest 2. The immensely talented drummer of punk-rock band Sum 41, EDM duo Krewella, and Street Drum Corps has also recently joined the SJC Drum family. Frank and SJC partnered with Shepard Fairey, American contemporary street artist, graphic designer, activist, and founder of OBEY to create a custom drum kit, which Frank used on tour with Sum 41 in the fall.
