Let’s take it back to Science a moment. Mitochondria are the powerhouse of the cell and Otep was nothing short of a powerhouse this past Friday at the Gas Monkey Bar and Grill in Dallas Texas. Having been a fan for years, but not actually seeing her live, I did not know what to expect. She put on a hell of show and left no question as to why she was the closing act.
The band consists of Otep Shemaya (lead vocals), Andrew Barnes (Bass), Ari Mihalopoulos (Guitar), and Justin Kier (Drums). The band’s new album Kult 45 has been locked and loaded in the direction of our current Chief of Staff. Songs like “To the Gallows” can give you a taste of their frame of mind. One of the most resounding things that stuck with me was a mid-set call to arms so to speak where she said a “people should never fear their government; the government should fear the people.” There is a lot to be said from this foursome and there are some valid points made. With the way things are presently in our country, many people have mixed opinions, but the root (discontent) is linear. A rolodex of tracks giving voice to the angry, those upset with the current state of things, and music is a powerful platform; it is a form of expression. Whether you agree or disagree with them, the central ideas stand, do not stand idle and be silent. For things to change, you must have a voice, and she is calling upon others to use that voice.
